Gleich in der Nähe vom Hostel besuche ich heute einen Künstler und bestaune seine Schnitzereien.
Very near of the hostel I visit an artist today and marvel at his carvings.

In der Stadt werden besondere Kunststücke angeboten, die aus Holz, Muscheln und Vulkangestein hergestellt werden.

Es sind knapp 4.000 Personen, die auf der Insel leben. Etwa die Hälfte von ihnen sind Ureinwohner. Die andere Hälfte kommt grossteils vom chilenischen Festland.

Rapa Nui wurde im 5. oder 6. Jahrhundert von Polynesien aus besiedelt. Eine zweite Besiedlungswelle fand in 14. Jahrhunder statt. Der Holländer Jakob Roggeveen entdeckte die Insel am Ostersonntag, dem 5. April 1722. Er nannte sie Paasch-Eyland (Osterinsel), nach dem Tag der Entdeckung.
Rapa Nui was colonized in the 5th or 6 century from Polynesian people . A second wave of settlement found in 14th century. The Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen discovered the island on Easter Sunday, the 5th April 1722. He called it Paasch-Eyland (Easter Island), after the date of discovery.

Diese katholische Kirche ist etwas anders. Neben dem gekreuzigten Jesus steht der "Vogelmann".

In Hanga Roa gibt es nur Strassenbezeichnungen, keine Hausnummern.

Alle paar Wochen wird die Insel mit Waren und Lebensmittel per Schiff beliefert. In diesen grossen Lagerhallen werden sie gelagert und an die Geschäfte verkauft.

Kaum ist es finster - beginnt der Horror. Plötzlich kriechen grosse Kakerlaken aus allen Löchern.
As soon as it is dark - the horror begins. Suddenly large cockroaches crawling out of every hole.

I panic. I want to go back to my room. I fall. The cockroaches are everywhere on my body. I try to chip them away from my body.
