2008 EIN TRAGISCHES JAHR / 2008 A TRAGIC YEAR / 2008 UN AÑO TRAGICO

In summer 2008, I planned the expedition up the longest road in the world, the Panamericana by motorcycle. The trip was discussed already 2 years before with my fellow board members and agreed. But it turned out differently than I had planned.

15 January 2008 - with a loud crack crashed the motorcycle into the door of my car. In slow motion I see the motorcyclist flying through the air until he hit with his body beside the road. Suddenly it's quiet.

I tear at my side door and run to the motorcyclists. He lies motionless on the back. The visor of his black helmet has gone. He still has his glasses on - he does not move anymore. "Hello, can you hear me?" My mind races. I pick up the phone and with trembling hands I dial the number 144, the ambulance.
"Hola, me oyes?"

"A motorcycle accident on the Gürtel, corner Hasnerstreet, please send help quickly. " Is anyone injured? "The motorcyclist is thrown through the air and lying on the ground - he did not move ..."

After interrogation by the police accident report and alcohol test, it is clear - it was my fault. I switched from the left, the 2nd lane to the 1st lane, even if I drove verry slowly and the motorcycle rider drove much more than the allowed 50 kilometer per hour.

Two hours later I'm sitting in my office, not 500 meters away emotfrom the accident site. I am completelyional empty. When I finally can breathe, the tears are running down my face.

So begann mein Jahr 2008.
Visit to the intensive care unit of the hospital. A wailing woman comes towards me - it is the mother of the young motorcyclist. We enter the room together. He lies in his bed. Associations, screws - it is a depressing situation. I get the information that bones of his hip has been cut out, as the injuries to the hand was so bad. I speak briefly with him. He says that he has just given gas, as the first Lane was free. When I moved into his lane, he could not brake and got stuck on the gas. I leave the hospital, sad and glad that he survived badly injured. This was the beginning of my year 2008.
