Ushuai ist von hohen Bergen umgeben. Lange stritt man sich mit dem zu Chile gehörenden Puerto Williams auf der Insel Navarino um die Ehre, die südlichste Stadt der Welt zu sein, jedoch einigte man sich schließlich darauf, Puerto Williams offiziell zum Titelträger zu ernennen.

Ushuai is surrounded by high mountains. There was a long fight between Puerto Williams (Chile) and Ushuaia (Argentinien) for the honor of being the southernmost city in the world, but it was finally agreed to Puerto Williams to officially appoint champions.

Als Reisender übernachte ich die meiste Zeit in Hostels. Das ist zum einen die günstigste Möglichkeit (nach Campen in der Wildernis) was aber viel wichtiger ist - man trifft dort gleichgesinnte Leute, kann Reisetipps austauschen und hat eine mehr- oder weniger gute Internetverbindung.
As a traveler I stay in hostels most of the time. For one thing, the cheapest option (after camping in the wilderness), but more importantly - where you meet like-minded people can share travel tips and has a more or less good internet connection.

Eine gute Internetverbindung brauche ich um meine Fotos auf Picasa hochzuladen und um meine Blogs zu schreiben. Die Badezimmer und Toiletten in den Hostels sind immer wieder ein Abenteuer. Dieses Badezimmer ist jedoch ganz OK.
I need a good internet connection to upload my photos on Picasa and post my blog. The bathrooms and toilets in the hostels are always a adventure. This bathroom is quite OK.

Im Hafen von Punta Arenas ist ein ausgemusterertes Kriegsschiff ausgestellt.

Heute geht es entlang der Magellanstrasse zuerst wieder nach Norden und dann nach Osten entlang der Ruta 255. Ich komme an einer der ehemals grössten Schaffarmen Chiles vorbei - der Estancia San Gregorio, die 1876 gegründet wurde. Neben Wolle wurden hier gefrorenes Hammelhäute und Talg produziert. Die Gebäude sind inzwischen alle verlassen.
Today it is along the Strait of Magellan back first to the north and then east along the Ruta 255th. Daneben an der Küste liegt ein altes Schiffswrack - die Amadeo war ein Dampfschiff und gehörte zu grossen Flotte des Schaf Baron Jose Mendez.

Auf der Fähre treffe ich auf 2 Motorradfahrer aus Argentinien und Brasilien. Der Argentinier macht sich gar nicht erst die Mühe nach meinem Namen zu fragen und so heisse ich ab sofort "Austria".
On the ferry I meet two motorcyclists from Argentina and Brazil. The Argentine does not make the effort to ask for my name so my name is now "Austria".

En el ferry me encuentro con dos motociclistas de Argentina y Brasil. El argentino se hace ni siquiera se molestó en preguntar por mi nombre para que mi nombre ahora es "Austria".

"Austria" y "Brazil" - vamos!!!! Und dann geht es auch schon gemeinsam Richtung Süden. Als die Strecke schlechter wird verabschieden wir uns. Die beiden Moterräder können mit dem starken Seitenwind und der KTM nicht mithalten. Während die beiden mit knapp 50 km/h gegen den Wind kämpfen, jage ich mit knapp 120 km/h über die Piste. Die beiden werden heute in Rio Grande übernachten. Mein Ziel ist es heute noch nach Ushuaia, zirka 210 Kilometer weiter zu kommen.

"Austria" y "Brazil" - vamos!! And then we drive south together. When the track is going bad, we say goodbye. The two motorcycles can not compete with the strong cross wind and the KTM. During the both are fighting with 50 km/h against the wind, I hunt with 120 km/h above the runway. The both want to stay this night at Rio Grande. My goal is still 210 km further - Ushuaia.

"Austria" y "Brasil" - Vamos! Y luego nos dirigiremos al sur juntos. Cuando la pista se va mal, nos despedimos. Las dos motos no puede competir con el viento cruzado fuerte y KTM al. Hier treffe ich auf einen anderen Motorradfahrer. Er kommt aus Griechenland, lebt und arbeitet aber schon seit über 30 Jahren in Bogota, Kolumbien. Seine kolumbianische Freundin dürfte so um die 20 Jahre alt sein. Sie wollen so wie ich, Sylvester in Ushuaia feiern.
Here I meet another motorcyclist. He comes from Greece, but lived and worked for over 30 years in Bogota, Colombia. His Colombian girlfriend should be aged around 20 years. They want to celebrate New Year in Ushuaia, like me.
Aquí me encuentro con otro motociclista. Él viene de Grecia, pero vivió y trabajó durante más de 30 años en Bogotá, Colombia. Su novia colombiana debe ser mayor de unos 20 años. Quieren celebrar el Año Nuevo en Ushuaia, como yo.

Auf Argentinischer Seite ist die Strasse wieder aspahltiert und ich kann ordentlich Gas geben.

On the Argentine side the road is asphalted again and I can apply pressure.

80 Kilometer vor Ushuaia komme ich in ein schweres Gewitter. ich verstaue meine Kamera im Tankrucksack und ziehe ihm eine Regenjacke um. Dann schlüpfe ich in meinen Regenoverall.

80 kilometers from Ushuaia I get into a heavy thunderstorm. I stash my camera in the tank bag and drag him to a rain jacket. Then I slip into my rain suit.
