FIRE - TORRES DEL PAINE IS BURNING

Torres del Paine Nationalpark / CHILE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Der Tag der Katastrophe. Heute passiert, was sich keiner wünscht. Ich bin plötzlich in einem Flammenmeer eingeschlossen.
The day of the disaster. Today happens, no one could wish for. I'm suddenly trapped in a sea of flames.

After the stormy night in Campamento Italiano I get ready for the climb.

Looking back on the lake, I see the wind whipped water. As it turned out to be false.

And then I'm on target. I'm on the back of Torres mountain range.

I cool my feet in the cold water. Then I meet Jorge, my doctor from yesterday. He has also stayed in Campamento Italiano. He told me - THE NATIONAL PARK IS ON FIRE!

More accurate, he does not know. So I make my way back to the Campamento Italiano. A big part of a glacier collapsed just before my eyes with a thunderous roar into the depths.

I meet this french couple. I met them at my hostel. They did the W from the other side. He is overthrown by the strong winds and has injured his hand. They dont know some more details of the fire. Only that some guys from Israel burned toiletpaper, although this is strictly prohibited.

Back at camp I am asking the ranger if it is possible to go to the boat dock at Refugio Paine Grande. No problem - the route is safe - and so I pack my things and make my way.

It is somehow ghostly going towards in the direction of a fire.

Due to the strong wind, the water of Lake Skottsberg is whipped up.

The smoke is getting thicker, the more I get closer to my goal.

At the same time I must be careful that I do not rush. The wind isvery strong.

After 2 1/2 hours I'm on target, the ranger station and the Refugio Paine Grande.

I use the Happy Hour and order pisco sour and chips.
Puedo usar el Happy Hour y el orden pisco sour y patatas fritas.

Mein Blick vom 1. Stock des Refugios auf die Rangerstation.
My view from the first Floor of the refugio to the ranger station.

Suddenly, the waiter comes and says that the restaurant is closed. I order one last round. He says - "no, the entire refuge must be cleared."

I see some not well equipped firefighters in front of the refugio. They want to remove the shrubs around the refugio that the fire can not arrive the refugio. But it is too late. The fire is approaching.

There are still about 60 people waiting to be rescued with a catamaran. Constantly other people arriving. Meanwhile, we are trapped by the fire.

Sehnsüchtig schauen wir auf den See. Und dann taucht endlich unsere Rettung auf.
We are look longingly at the lake. And then finally we see our salvation.

With a queasy feeling I go on board. There are still many people who went to Refugio Paine Grande and I have not seen them yet.

A look back at the inferno. We've only just succeeded to get away.

As I learned later, three people died that day.
